Once again, it's fire season in Southern California.
The fire, fuelled by hot weather during the past four days, was continuing to spread on Sunday.
Evacuation orders cover about 10,000 homes, with state governor Arnold Schwarzenegger describing the fires as "still totally out of control".
About 2,000 firefighters are trying to contain the blaze, which has burnt more than 55 sq miles (142 sq km) of forest.
Mr Schwarzenegger urged people to obey evacuation orders, after three people were hurt.
"There were people that did not listen and there were three people that got burned and got critically injured because they did not listen," he said.
About 1,000 homes have been evacuated and a handful in Big Tujunga Canyon have been destroyed by the flames.
Officials said the blaze was only 5% contained, with the area's steep, rugged hills making efforts to fight the fire more difficult.
Mandatory evacuation orders covering about 10,000 homes and 2,500 other buildings are in place.
Parts of Altadena, Glendale, Pasadena, La Crescenta and Big Tujunga Canyon are affected.
Evacuation centres have been set up at local schools.
On Saturday, Captain Mike Dietrich, incident commander for the US Forest Service, told the Associated Press news agency: "Today what happened is what I call the perfect storm of fuels, weather and topography coming together.
"Essentially the fire burned at will; it went where it wanted to when it wanted to."
Smoke from the blaze in the Angeles National Forest could be seen drifting across the skies above Los Angeles.

I'm leaving work at 1:00 tomorrow and taking a basket of cuttings for daughter # 3's garden in the desert.
Then on Saturday, one of us is going to get all covered in mud for a good cause. The other one of us will be taking photos.

It's about eight feet tall and finally producing fruit. I picked a tiny one this morning. It smelled like bell pepper. Then I rubbed my eyes.

There were five squirrels in the yard at once. One and two at a time, they stretched out on the patio with pigeons, sparrows and ravens dining on seed and cracked corn nearby. Sometimes there are perfect mornings.
It's really just a storage shed, but it has lighting and air conditioning. I think it was a workshop at one time. I want to do window treatments inside and then paint the peeling wood siding maybe pink camo.
