Many people over the eons have asked, “What’s happened to our language?”

Internetspeak (lol!) texting shorthand (ctch u @ teh rstrnt, k?) and even not speaking at all has become the norm. Recently, I witnessed two young women sitting together waiting for takeout. They would occasionally break into giggles as their thumbs worked furiously on their tiny keyboards.

They were texting each other sitting ten inches apart in a restaurant.

As the current methods of communication evolve, I really think we’ve lost some of the image-inducing phrases of our recent past.

In past posts, I’ve made vignets of life with my ex-hub fodder for a little humor. But I have to tell you, reader, that my in-laws were pure gold. They were country people (one of the most singular things about this is that country people can cook. I learned my most legendary “cookings” from those salt-of-the-earth people. I learned to make preserves, can tomatoes, whip up a mean sweet turnip casserole and make a rhubarb pie to die for).

I came from a family of conservative, gloves-at-church tightasses. We are not colorful due to our handicapped DNA.

The phraseology of these in-relatives blew me away with their wit and wry humor and descriptiveness. To my young mind, it was nothing short of awesome.

To wit :

“Honest to John!” Translation: I swear!

“By Jimminy whiz” Translation: Goddamnit!

“If it’ll go in a pig’s ass.....” A comment on the low moral standards of some men.

“Going out to the red-light” On visiting a Lady of the Evening.

And, about basic stupidity: “He couldn’t pour piss out of a boot without reading the directions on the heel.” .

Thanksgiving Day is just about over.

I've spent it alone.

It wasn't like I had nothing to do; nowhere to go. A couple of friends sweetly extended invitations to their celebrations. When thanking one of them, I revealed that I wasn't doing anything, that I was being this holiday rebel.

She hugged me and wished me a wonderful time.

See, I'm usually the cook. I've usually been the main kitchen police. I've been the hostess for most all of my Thanksgivings. The shopping ahead, the preparing of dishes the day before, the getting the turkey just right and all the side dishes done at the same time is always wonderful, and always a great time with friends and family.

But, for the first time in many decades I decided I didn't need or want to do That this year. Instead, I had a DiGiorno-based margherita pizza with Caesar salad in front of the computer.

You know what? It was pretty nice. I did reflect once or twice about what else I might be doing on this day, but mostly I thought about just how many things for which I have to be thankful. The list could go on and on, but the things that always first come to mind are:

My children.

My family. All of it; warts and all.

My job. Especially during these difficult times.

My employer. As well as my boss, I count her as friend.

My dear friends, some of whom go back 30+ years.

A roof over my head and enough good food.

Good books to read.

Music. Always music.

A garden. Any garden. Fellow gardeners.

A soft, clean bed.

Christmas.

I'll be putting up the tree this weekend.

Here's a hug for my family, friends and those not yet met.

An important touchstone

Below is an excerpt from my friend, Jamie's, new blog. I'll be linking to it on my side bar as well. Her continuing story is honest and touching and tragic. She is one of the strongest, most admirable women I've met in my life. Please, if you know anyone who has lost a child under tragic circumstances, mail them a link to Jamie's page.

"In October 2005, my daughter Ashley took a cruise with her boyfriend and some of his friends to celebrate her upcoming 25th birthday. Within 24 hours of the ship sailing, she was found not breathing by her boyfriend. A 911 call was made and the ship’s medical staff eventually responded but their efforts to resuscitate her were insufficient and unsuccessful. The ship was, at the time of her death, in territorial waters and so the Mexican authorities were notified. So was the FBI and between the two warring investigative agencies little was done in the name of justice for Ashley. Perhaps because of the jurisdictional issues or some reason known only to the cruise line, her body was taken off the ship and left alone in a morgue in Mexico."

And flu season continues

This is important info for this flu season regarding H1N1. This is the real stuff. Check it out:

The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible to avoid coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is. While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):

1. Frequent hand-washing.

2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat, bathe or slap).

3. Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/ nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't underestimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at Jala Neti or Sutra Neti (very good Yoga asanas to clean nasal cavities), but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton buds dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.

5. Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C (Amla and other citrus fruits). *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption.

6. Drink as much of warm liquids (tea, coffee, etc) as you can. *Drinking warm liquids has the same effect as gargling, but in the reverse direction. They wash off proliferating viruses from the throat into the stomach where they cannot survive, proliferate or do any harm.

Once again, it's fire season in Southern California.

The fire, fuelled by hot weather during the past four days, was continuing to spread on Sunday.

Evacuation orders cover about 10,000 homes, with state governor Arnold Schwarzenegger describing the fires as "still totally out of control".

About 2,000 firefighters are trying to contain the blaze, which has burnt more than 55 sq miles (142 sq km) of forest.

Mr Schwarzenegger urged people to obey evacuation orders, after three people were hurt.

"There were people that did not listen and there were three people that got burned and got critically injured because they did not listen," he said.

About 1,000 homes have been evacuated and a handful in Big Tujunga Canyon have been destroyed by the flames.

Officials said the blaze was only 5% contained, with the area's steep, rugged hills making efforts to fight the fire more difficult.

Mandatory evacuation orders covering about 10,000 homes and 2,500 other buildings are in place.

Parts of Altadena, Glendale, Pasadena, La Crescenta and Big Tujunga Canyon are affected.

Evacuation centres have been set up at local schools.

On Saturday, Captain Mike Dietrich, incident commander for the US Forest Service, told the Associated Press news agency: "Today what happened is what I call the perfect storm of fuels, weather and topography coming together.

"Essentially the fire burned at will; it went where it wanted to when it wanted to."

Smoke from the blaze in the Angeles National Forest could be seen drifting across the skies above Los Angeles.

Two and a half day weekend

An easy enough mistake

Also, last year and for most of this year up until today I thought this was a bell pepper plant:

It's about eight feet tall and finally producing fruit. I picked a tiny one this morning. It smelled like bell pepper. Then I rubbed my eyes.
